Houston Area Women's Center

hawc-logoThe 5th Annual Montrose Crawl benefits the Houston Area Women’s Center.  The Women's Center helps individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives forward. They provide shelter, counseling and advocacy to support survivors in building lives free from the effects of violence. The Women's Center seeks social change to end domestic and sexual violence through community awareness and education. All services are confidential and available to everyone.

The Houston Area Women's Center has been a member of the Houston community since 1977 and part of the United Way family since 1981. Over the years, it has grown from a grassroots effort run by volunteers to an organization employing over 120 staff. Volunteers continue to help the Women's Center deliver vital services by contributing their time, expertise and goods to ensure that the agency remains client-focused.

The Women's Center directs 83 cents of every dollar towards client services and community outreach (for more information on program efficiency, visit Charity Navigator).  In 2010 alone, donations to the Women's Center allowed them to:

  • Answer 41,357 calls to their domestic violence hotline and 2,706 to the sexual assault crisis hotline
  • Sheltered 2,332 women and children from emergency situations
  • Counseled 4,604 children who were victims or witnesses of domestic violence and/or sexual assault
  • Counsel 8,789 adult survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
